1.     Ashok Lavasa assumed charge as the Election Commissioner (EC) of India. Lavasa succeeds Om Prakash Rawat, who was elevated as the Chief Election Commissioner. The third member of the top election body is Election Commissioner Sunil Arora.
2.     Renowned scientist, S Somanath took charge as the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
3.   Former Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel was sworn in as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. Anandiben Patel succeeds Ramnaresh Yadav.
4.     Senior-most Election Commissioner, Om Prakash Rawat was appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner in the Election Commission. He would be succeeding outgoing CEC Achal Kumar Joti.
5.  Renowned scientist Sivan K was appointed as the Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
6.       Dilip Asbe was appointed as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
7.    Senior diplomat Vijay Keshav Gokhale was appointed as the Foreign Secretary of India. Gokhale succeeds S Jaishankar.
8.      This year President Ram Nath Kovind has approved conferment of 85 Padma Awards including two duo cases. The list comprises 3 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 73 Padma Shri awardees.

11.     The Teen Murti Chowk in central Delhi was formally renamed as Teen Murti-Haifa, after Israeli city Haifa in a solemn ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu.
12.     The World Economic Forum (WEF), in its 'Readiness for the future of production report', has ranked India at 30th position on a global manufacturing index above BRICS peers, Brazil (41st), Russia (35th) and South Africa (45th); except China, which has found the 5th place.
13.     The 48th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) began in Davos, Switzerland with the theme 'Creating a Shared Future in a Fractured World'. The Indian contingent at the summit, which is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is the largest ever with over 130 participants including Shah Rukh Khan.
14.     India is set to host the International Dam Safety Conference - 2018 at Thiruvananthapuram.
15.     The Election Commission of India constituted a 14 member committee to suggest changes to Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 in view of social media expansion. The Committee will be chaired by Senior Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha.
16.     The 8th National Voters' day was observed across India on January 25, 2018 with an aim to increase enrolment of voters, especially of the newly eligible ones.
17.     The National Girl Child Day was observed across India on January 24, 2018.
18.     The Indo-US joint military exercise ‘Vajra Prahar’ will be undertaken in Seattle, US.
19.     India ranked 177th among 180 countries on the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2018, released by Yale and Columbia Universities along with the World Economic Forum on January 24, 2018. The report was released during the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. On the other hand, Switzerland leads the Environmental Performance Index.
20.     All the 10 ASEAN leaders would be attending India’s 69th Republic Day parade on January 26. ASEAN nations include Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Brunei.
21.     The European Union removed eight countries including Panama from its new tax haven blacklist, 2018, after they pledged to address its concerns.
22.     The Supreme Court has directed the Centre to set up a tribunal to resolve the dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over the sharing of water from river Mahanadi.
23.     The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K Palanichamy received the UNESCO Award of Merit awarded to the iconic Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple in the city of Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu.
24.     The World Economic Forum (WEF) launched the Global Centre for Cyber security. Headquartered in Geneva, the centre will become operational from March 2018.
25.     India has been ranked 81st on the annual global index of talent competitiveness, which was released on the first day of the 48th World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. While Switzerland continues to top the list.

26.     The United States Senate confirmed the appointment of Jerome H Powell as the Chairman of the Federal Reserve System, the central banking system of the United States. Powell will replace Janet Yellen.
27.     The Supreme Court paved the way for screening of Bollywood film 'Padmaavat' by rejecting the pleas of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh governments and the Karni Sena which sought a ban on the release of the film.
28.     India and World Bank signed USD 120 million loan agreement to improve water supply services in peri-urban areas of Uttarakhand.
29.     US President Donald Trump signed a bill reopening the government, ending a 3-day partial shutdown. The partial government shutdown, which began on January 20. It came after the Senate failed to pass a funding bill, due to clashes between the Democrats and Republicans over key issues including immigration.
30.     Chandra Bhushan Paliwal was appointed as the chairman of the newly-constituted Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC).
31.     The World Economic Forum released the Inclusive Development Index, which places India at the 62nd spot among emerging economies, much behind its neighbours China and Pakistan, which are placed at 26th and 47th position respectively. According to the report, Norway remains world’s most inclusive advanced economy.
32.     India joined the Australia Group export control regime, an informal forum that seeks to ensure that exports do not contribute to the development of chemical or biological weapons. India has become the 43rd member of the group.
33.     Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu inaugurated the iCREATE facility at Deo Dholera Village in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
34.     India successfully test-fired the indigenously developed long-range surface-to-surface ballistic missile, Agni-5, off the coast of Odisha. Missile developed by DRDO, has a strike range of over 5,000 kilometres.
35.     Indian Captain Virat Kohli was named the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year at the ICC annual awards, which were announced in Dubai. This is the second time that Kohli has won the award, his first being in 2012.
36.     China has constructed an experimental air purifying tower called the Xian smog tower, which is touted to be the ‘world’s biggest air purifier’ with a height of over 100 meters, to combat smog and air pollution.
37.     North and South Korea, in a rare move, agreed on 17 January 2018 to march together under a single unified Korean flag at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics, which is scheduled to go underway in South Korea in February 2018.
38.     Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the project commencement of the Rajasthan oil refinery at Pachpadra in Barmer district of the state. The oil refinery is the first one to be set up in Rajasthan.
39.     The Union Government has decided to end Haj subsidy from this year.
40.     Myanmar and Bangladesh have agreed to repatriate the refugee community of Rohingyas, who were displaced last year due to military crackdown in Rakhine state of Myanmar, ‘within two years’.
41.     The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDA) introduced face authentication as an additional means of Aadhaar authentication along with fingerprint and iris scan. It will be available by 1 July 2018.
42.     India signed 9 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with Israel, during the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to India.
43.     The 70th Army Day was observed across the nation on 15 January 2018.
44.     India signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the United Kingdom for the return of Indians, who have been residing in Britain as illegal migrants, and sharing of criminal records and intelligence.
45.     ISRO launched 31 satellites along with Cartosat-2 satellite on its 44.4-metre tall Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C40) rocket. The polar rocket was launched from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. Among 31 satellites, three satellites belong to India and 28 are of six other countries. The Indian satellites are 710 kg Cartosat-2 series, a 100 kg micro satellite and a 5 kg nano satellite.
46.     India is celebrating the 155th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda on 12 January. His birthday is also observed as National Youth Day in the country.
47.     In a major digital initiative to help plan the traffic flows and optimize freight operations, Ministry of Railways have launched Smart Freight Operation Optimisation & Real Time Information (SFOORTI) App for Freight Managers.
48.     Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos has become the richest person in the world with worth $105 billion.  Jeff  Bezos replaced Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
49.     The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), in order to address privacy concerns, introduced a new concept of Virtual ID which Aadhaar-card holder can generate from its website and give for various purposes, wherever Aadhaar number is necessary to provide. Now, Aadhaar-card holders do not need to share the actual 12-digit biometric ID for any authentication, instead they can simply give the newly introduced Virtual ID. The Virtual ID would be a random 16-digit number.  It will be linked with the biometrics of the user that would give any authorised agency like a mobile company, limited access of details like name, address and photograph, which are sufficient for any verification.
50.     Matunga Railway Station in Mumbai Division of Central Railway has entered into Limca Book of Records 2018 for posting all women staff managing the operations of the stations.

51.     The Union Cabinet led by the Prime Minister has given its approval to a number of amendments to the FDI Policy. In which 100% FDI allowed under automatic route for Single Brand Retail Trading.
52.     According to the World Bank’s Global Economic Prospects report, India’s economy will grow by 6.7% during the current fiscal year, higher than the 6.5% estimate by the Indian government.
53.     Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 1st PIO (Persons of India Origin) Parliamentarian Conference in New Delhi on 9th January.
54.     The Supreme Court ruled that playing the national anthem before screening movies in cinema halls is not mandatory. The ruling modifies November 2016 order of Supreme Court that made the playing of national anthem in cinemas mandatory.
55.     Union Minister of Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan dedicated to India, the nation’s first and fastest multi-petaflops supercomputer at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune. Named ‘Pratyush’, which means the Sun, the supercomputer will be a national facility for improving weather and climate forecasts.
56.     France would be conferring its highest order of merit, the 'Legion of Honour', on legendary film and theatre actor Soumitra Chattopadhyay at the 42nd International Kolkata Book Fair.
57.     The International Kite Festival was inaugurated by Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Gujarat.
58.     RBI introduced the Rs 10 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, bearing signature of Governor Urjit R. Patel. The new denomination has motif of Sun Temple, Konark on the reverse, depicting the country's cultural heritage. The base colour of the note is Chocolate Brown. The dimension of the banknote will be 63 mm x 123 mm.
59.     The United States of America announced that it has suspended over 1 billion US dollar security assistance to Pakistan, accusing the nation of harbouring terror groups like the Afghan Taliban and the Haqqani Network within its border.
60.     The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the establishment of AIIMS in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh. The new AIIMS will be set up under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY).
61.     The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Amendment) Bill, 2017 was passed by the Parliament’s upper house, Rajya Sabha. It will allow the central government to increase the authorised capital of NABARD from Rs 5,000 crore to Rs 30,000 crore.
62.     Union Minister of Women & Child Development Maneka Sanjay Gandhi inaugurated the online portal 'NARI' for women empowerment. NARI stands for 'National Repository of Information for Women'.
63.     India and Pakistan exchanged the lists of their nuclear installations under an agreement that aims to prevent both sides from attacking such facilities.
64.     Union Information Technology and Electronics Ministry announced to launch the Stree Swabhiman Initiative to ensure and maintain perfect health for Women and maintain Health Hygiene. The initiative was launched in partnership with Common Service Centres (CSCs).
65.     President Ram Nath Kovind launched the Pulse Polio programme 2018 by administering polio drops to children less than five years old at the Rahstrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. The programme was launched on the eve of the National Immunization Day, which is observed every year on 28 January 2018.
66.     The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved MoU between India and Canada for cooperation in the field of Science & Technology.
67.     The government of India has achieved a major milestone by connecting over one lakh Gram Panchayats (GP) across the country with high-speed optical fiber network under the BharatNet Phase-1 project as per the declared deadline of 31 Dec 2017.  BharatNet network built under Phase 1 envisages delivery of high-speed broadband services in over 2.5 lakh villages benefitting more than 200 million rural Indians.
68.     The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the agreement between India and Myanmar on Land Border Crossing.
69.     The Union Government has allowed Small Finance Banks and Payments Banks to offer Atal Pension Yojana (APY).
70.     The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) led by the Prime Minister has given its nod to the continuation of Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) till the term of the 14th Finance Commission i.e. 31st March 2020.
71.     Israel has filed notice to withdraw from the UNESCO alongside the United States. Israel has blasted UNESCO in recent years over the organisation's criticism of Israel's occupation of East Jerusalem and its decision to grant full membership to Palestine in 2011.
72.     Arunachal Pradesh has been declared open defecation free ahead of the national deadline of October 2, 2019.
73.     The State Bank of India reduced the base rate and benchmark prime lending rates by 30 basis points. SBI revised down the base rate to 8.65 percent for existing customers from 8.95 percent.
74.     The Cabinet has approved the signing and implementation of the MoU between Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and ‘Transport for London’ to improve public transport in the country.

80.     The Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank (APGVB) has operationalised its first desktop ATM in Telangana. The mini-ATM within the branch premises will facilitate customers to withdraw small amounts.

82.     The world's biggest cleanliness survey 'Swachh Sarvekshan Survey 2018' was launched in India by PM Narendra Modi. It will be conducted from the 4th of January to 10th of March.
83.     India has excluded Pakistan from the list of SAARC member countries with which it will be connecting its state-of-the-art National Knowledge Network (NKN) for sharing scientific databases and remote access to advanced research facilities. The government has kicked off the process of appointing a telecom company that will connect and extend the NKN to research and education networks in six South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation member states- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka.
84.     The Indian economy will expand by 6.5% in 2017-18, according to the new data of the government’s Central Statistics Office (CSO). It had released its first advance estimate for India’s GDP growth rate in the current financial year. The economy had grown by 6.3% in the September quarter, after slumping to a three-year low of 5.7%.
85.     West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unveiled the official emblem of the state government, which was recently approved by the centre. The logo highlights the Ashoka emblem on the top with the theme of "Biswa Bangla" at the centre.
86.     The World Book Fair started in New Delhi. Environment issues like climate change, global warming, and water pollution will be the main theme for this year’s Fair.
87.     Defence Ministry has cleared contracts worth 2,420 crore rupees for Navy and Army which includes the procurement of P-8I Training Solution and Low-Intensity Conflict Electronic Warfare System (LICEWS).

93.     The managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Ravi Menon, has been named the best central bank governor in Asia-Pacific for 2018 by UK-based magazine, The Banker.
94.     Arunachal Pradesh would get its first Film and Television Institute. This would be the second such one in the country. The first Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) was set up in Pune.

96.     Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal launched a common card for rides on public buses and the metro. It will be operational in all DTC and cluster buses from April 2018.
97.     World’s largest Ice Festival 'International Ice and Snow Festival' was held in Harbin, China. This is one of China’s coldest cities in the winter. It is the 34th annual Ice Festival in Harbin, north-east China.
98.     Music composer A R Rahman became the brand ambassador of Sikkim.
99.     Gujarat has topped the logistics index chart, according to a Report released by Union Minister for Commerce & Industry Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi. The chart is an indicator of the efficiency of logistical services necessary for promoting exports in particular and economic growth in general.

101. Karnataka topped all states with investment intentions of Rs. 1.49 lakh crore till October 2017. The investment was 43 percent of the country's total investment intentions
102. Paytm has set up a new entity called Paytm Money Ltd that will offer investment and wealth management products and will invest close to $10 million upfront in the new entity.

112. Retail inflation crossed the RBI’s comfort level and rose to 5.21 percent in December on rise in prices of food items, egg and vegetables, dashing hopes of interest rate cut in the near future.

India has emerged as a top borrower from the China-sponsored Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) with USD 1.5 billion worth of loans last year and USD three billion more in the pipeline. Next to India, Indonesia has emerged as the second largest borrower with about USD 600 million loans.
114. IDFC Bank and Capital First has approved a merger of Capital First with IDFC Bank.
115. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE)'s India International Exchange listed the first bond on its Global Securities Market. The bonds issued by Indian Railways Finance Corporation (IRFC) are one of the highest credit rated bonds issued by an Indian corporate and has been IRFC's first foray into the Green Bond market.

128. India’s most-valued lender HDFC Bank Ltd crossed Rs5 trillion market capitalisation for the first time, making it only the third Indian company to achieve this milestone. Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) and Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) are the other two companies which crossed market capitalisation of Rs5 trillion.

131. As per the Power Minister RK Singh, India will set up a $350-million fund to finance solar projects as the country steps up efforts to achieve its ambitious target of adding 175 gigawatts (GW) in renewable energy by 2022.
132. Facebook-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp has rolled out a feature that connects small businesses with customers. Currently, only Android users can access the feature and they can avail of it through the latest update of the app. The new feature will be available first in Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, UK and the US before being launched globally in the coming weeks.
133. The fourth edition of the India International Science Festival will be held in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
134. Mauritius was the largest source of foreign investment in India (21.8 per cent share at market value), followed by the US and the UK, according to a census by the Reserve Bank of India. Singapore and Japan were the next two sources of foreign direct investment (FDI).

137. Valletta, the capital of Malta, was officially named European Capital of Culture 2018. Valletta will share the title with Leeuwarden, a city in the Netherlands.

Electoral bonds can be purchased for any value in multiples of Rs. 1,000, Rs. 10,000, Rs. 10 lakh, and Rs. 1 crore from any of the specified branches of the State Bank of India. “The purchaser will be allowed to buy electoral bonds only on due fulfilment of all the extant KYC norms and by making payment from a bank account,” Mr. Jaitley said. “It will not carry the name of the payee.” The bonds, aimed at increasing transparency in political funding, will have a life of 15 days during which they can be used to make donations to registered political parties that have secured not less than 1% of the votes polled in the last election to the Lok Sabha or Assembly. The bonds shall be available for purchase for a period of 10 days each in the months of January, April, July and October, with an additional 30 days to be specified by the Central government in the year of a general election.

In a clarification about the Financial Regulatory and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) Bill, the government has said depositors will be given preferential treatment in the event of liquidation of a bank, and the controversial bail-in clause will be used only with the prior consent of depositors. The clarification also said the bail-in clause would not be applied to public sector banks, and it would be a tool of last resort — when a merger or acquisition is not viable — in the case of private sector banks. The government reiterated its implicit guarantee for the solvency of public sector banks. Under current laws, deposits with banks are insured up to Rs. 1 lakh. Under the FRDI law, the Resolution Corporation is empowered to increase this deposit insurance amount.
163. The Lok Sabha passed a Bill to hike the salaries of judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts. The Bill proposes to hike the salary of the Chief Justice of India to Rs. 2.80 lakh a month, and that of judges of the Supreme Court and Chief Justices of High Courts to Rs. 2.5 lakh a month. Judges of High Courts will draw a salary of Rs. 2.25 lakh a month once this Bill becomes law.
164. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) forecast that GDP growth in the current financial year ending March 31 will slow to a four-year low of 6.5%, from the provisional 7.1% pace seen in 2016-17, dragged down by deceleration in the agriculture and manufacturing sectors.

In an unprecedented act, four senior judges of the Supreme Court held a press conference and publicly accused Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra of selectively assigning cases to judges of his choice without any rational basis. Transcending judicial protocol that sitting judges should not interact with the media, Justices Jasti Chelameswar, Ranjan Gogoi, Madan B. Lokur and Kurian Joseph — the senior-most judges after the CJI — accused Justice Misra of assigning cases of “far-reaching consequences to the nation” to junior hand-picked judges against the time-tested convention, practice and tradition of the court.

177. The government announced the details of the Rs. 2.1 lakh crore recapitalisation plan for public sector banks (PSBs) it had announced in October 2017. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the recapitalisation package would be spread across the current financial year 2017-18 and the next year 2018-19. The capital infusion plan for 2017-18 includes Rs. 80,000 crore through recapitalisation bonds and Rs. 8,139 crore as budgetary support. Recapitalisation package would follow a differentiated approach for banks that have been assigned for prompt corrective action (PCA) and those that have not. In financial year 2017-18, the recapitalisation amount for PCA banks would be Rs. 52, 311 crore, of which the largest beneficiaries include IDBI (Rs. 10,610 crore), Bank of India (Rs. 9,232 crore), UCO Bank (Rs. 6,507 crore), and Central Bank of India (Rs. 5,158 crore). The recapitalisation amount for non-PCA banks for this year is Rs. 35,828 crore, with the largest beneficiaries being State Bank of India (Rs. 8,800 crore), Punjab National Bank (Rs. 5,473 crore), and Bank of Baroda (Rs. 5,375 crore).
