President Approved Reservation Bill - President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the Constitution (124th  Amendment) Bill, 2019 that provides 10% reservation to the economically backward section in the general category in government jobs and education. According to a gazette notification, the legislation will be known as the Constitution (103 Amendment) Act, 2019.

103rd Constitutional Amendment Act 2019 - The Act amends Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution — ensuring Fundamental Rights to a citizen — by adding a clause that allows the State to make “special provision for the advancement of any economically weaker sections of citizens”. These provisions would relate to “their admission to educational institutions, including private educational institutions, whether aided or unaided by the State, other than the minority educational institutions”. The Act makes it clear that reservation would be “in addition to the existing reservations and subject to a maximum of 10% of the total seats in each category”. Unlike other Constitutional Bills that require ratification from half of the State Assemblies, the Law Minister had clarified that this Act would not require such a process.

Longest Partial Shutdown of USA - The partial shutdown of the US government has become the longest on record, with still no end in sight to the political standoff. On 12 January, it reaches its 22nd day, overtaking the previous record - the 21-day shutdown in 1995-96 under then-President Bill Clinton. President Donald Trump is refusing to approve a budget unless it includes funds for a wall on the Mexican border. Democrats have rejected his request for $5.7bn. Meanwhile, President Trump has calmed speculation that he is about to declare a national emergency in order to bypass Congress and get the money he needs.

One Family One Job - Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling launched the ‘One Family One Job’ scheme which entitles one government job for every family in the state. Employment will be provided to only those families which do not have a government job at present. Chamling said that Sikkim has become the first state in the country to carry out such an exclusive programme.

IDFC First Bank Ltd - Private sector lender IDFC Bank said its name has been changed to IDFC First Bank Ltd with effect from January 12, 2019. IDFC Bank and non-banking financial company Capital First had announced completion of their merger on December 18. Following the merger, the board of IDFC Bank had approved the appointment of V Vaidyanathan, founder and chairman of Capital First Ltd, as managing director and chief executive officer of the merged entity.

According to Standard Chartered Plc, China will assume the top spot by dislodging the US, which will fall to third on the list behind the two Asian giants.
