Election Commission Imposed Restrictions on Four Politicians - The Election Commission imposed restrictions on the campaigning of four senior politicians for violating the model code of conduct in Uttar Pradesh. The EC put a 72-hour prohibition on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and a 48-hour ban on Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, beginning at 6 AM on 16 April. Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, the BJP candidate from Sultanpur, has been restrained for 48 hours, and a 72-hour restriction has been imposed on Azam Khan, Samajwadi Party candidate from Rampur, beginning from 10 AM on 16 April.

Ban on TikTok Mobile Application - The Supreme Court refused to stay an interim order of the Madras High Court to the Centre to prohibit the TikTok mobile application over concerns about inappropriate content. A Bench, led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, addressed Chinese company ByteDance, owner of the popular short-form video application, that the High Court’s order was an interim one. In April, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had even ordered the media houses to refrain from telecasting TikTok videos and asked the Centre whether a law, similar to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of the U.S., could be brought in to prevent children from becoming victims of cyber and online crimes. The court took cognisance of the fact that Indonesia and Bangladesh had banned TikTok and the U.S. enacted the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act to safeguard children.

World's Largest Aircraft - The world's largest aircraft took off over the Mojave Desert in California, the first flight for the carbon-composite plane built by Stratolaunch Systems Corp, started by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, as the company enters the lucrative private space market. The white airplane called Roc is powered by six engines on a twin fuselage. The plane is designed to drop rockets and other space vehicles weighing up to 500,000 pounds at an altitude of 35,000 feet. The company seeks to cash in on higher demand in coming years for vessels that can put satellites in orbit. Stratolaunch has said that it intends to launch its first rockets from the Roc in 2020 at the earliest.

Cabinet Approved GSLV Phase-4 Programme - The Union Cabinet has approved the Rs 3,000-crore GSLV phase-4 programme under which five geo-orbit satellites will be launched in coming three years from 2021 to 2024. The programme will enable the launch of two-tonne class satellites for geo-imaging, navigation, data-relay communication and space sciences. Data relay communication satellite will be significant as it will support the country’s maiden human spaceflight or Gaganyaan programme, whose deadline is fixed in December 2021, and the country’s interplanetary mission to Mars in 2022-23. Once the Gaganyaan and the subsequent Mars spacecraft are launched, the data relay satellite will act as a communication link between the spacecraft in space and the deep space control room in Karnataka’s Byalalu.

'Nirbhay' Missile Test Fired - India successfully test-fired its first indigenously designed and developed long-range sub-sonic cruise missile 'Nirbhay' from Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha. The all-weather missile, has a 1,000-kilometre strike range. The missile has been developed by Bengaluru-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a lab under DRDO and can be launched from multiple platforms.

Bhutan Decided to Ratify Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal Initiative - The Bhutan government has decided to send the bill for ratification of the Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal (BBIN) initiative for road and rail connectivity to its upper senate. However, only Bangladesh, India and Nepal have implemented the agreement. The BBIN is a big initiative in the region, which is aimed at improving rail and road connectivity in the region. The agreement for the initiative – the BBIN Motor Vehicle Agreement -was signed by the four member nations in June 2015. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has been providing technical, advisory, and financial support to the BBIN MVA initiative.

NGT Formed Central Monitoring Committee - The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has formed a Central Monitoring Committee to prepare and enforce a national plan to make over 350 river stretches across the country pollution free. The committee would comprise a representative of NITI Aayog, secretaries of Ministry of Water Resources, Ministry of Urban Development and Ministry of Environment, the director general of National Mission for Clean Ganga and the Chairman of the Central Pollution Control Board. The Chairman of CPCB will be the nodal authority for coordination.
