Bhanu Pratap Sharma - The government has constituted a seven-member panel to select managing directors of public sector insurance companies. The panel would be headed by Banks Board Bureau (BBB) chairman Bhanu Pratap Sharma. The other members of the panel are Financial Services Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises Secretary and Chairman of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.

Political Controversy in Sri Lanka - In Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from the post of Prime minister. He was controversially appointed Prime minister by President Maithirpala Sirisena on 26th October suddenly replacing Mr. Ranil Wickremsinghe. However, he failed to garner majority in Parliament and President attempt to dissolve parliament was nullified by Supreme court in a decision. Mr. Ranil Wickremsinghe will be sworn in again to the post of Prime minister.

Recapitalisation Plan of Public Sector Banks - Government of India announced recapitalisation of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) to the tune of Rs. 2.11 lakh crore in October 2017, through infusion of capital by the Government and raising of capital by banks from the markets. Rs. 88,139 crore was infused by the Government in PSBs during financial year (FY) 2017-18 and provision of Rs. 65,000 crore has been made in the budget for the current financial year for infusion. Since the recapitalisation announcement till November 2018, PSBs have been recapitalised to the tune of Rs. 1,28,861 crore through infusion and mobilisation of capital from the market.

Kevadiya Railway Station - President Ram Nath Kovind laid the foundation stone for Indian Railways’ Kevadiya station, thereby taking the first step to give the world’s tallest statue, Statue of Unity an easy connectivity with the rest of the country. The ceremony was also attended by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani and the Governor of Gujarat Om Prakash Kohli.

Jaitapur Nuclear Plant - French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj reviewed the status of the European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) project in Jaitapur in coastal Maharashtra. The power plant will have six reactors with a capacity of 1,650 MW each. Once installed, the Jaitapur project will be the largest nuclear power plant in the world, with a total capacity of 9,600 MW.

Sterlite Copper Plant - The Tamil Nadu government will move the Supreme Court against the order of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) favouring the reopening of Vedanta's Sterlite Copper plant in Thoothukudi, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami told. The State had ordered the permanent closure of the plant on alleged pollution charges after the violent protests in May.

Norms for Inflight Connectivity - Department of telecom (DoT) notified rules for inflight connectivity (IFC). Now the interested parties wanting to provide IFC can apply to DoT for grant of license. These parties can, in turn, be the service provider for airlines wishing to give onboard WiFi for flights to, from and within India and also those flying over the Indian airspace.

Sumitra Mahajan, Hon’ble Speaker, Lok Sabha.
