Solih, who surprisingly defeated Maldivian strongman Abdulla Yameen in polls in September, arrived India on his first foreign visit after assuming office. Relations between India and the Maldives deteriorated further after Yameen imposed emergency on February 5 2018.

Data Localization Norms - The RBI in April issued a new regulation, which came into effect from October 16, requiring payments companies to store all information about transactions involving Indians solely on computers in the country. Mastercard said all new Indian transaction data is being stored at its technology centre in Pune as of October 6, as required by the RBI directive on data localisation.

Vijay Diwas - The Nation celebrated Vijay Diwas to commemorate India's victory over Pakistan in 1971 war. On 16 December 1971, the chief of the Pakistani forces, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with 93 thousand troops, had surrendered unconditionally to the allied forces consisting of Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, led by Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora in Dhaka after their defeat in the Liberation war. This historic victory led to creation of Bangladesh.

Climate Change Summit in Katowice - After two weeks of intense negotiations at Katowice in Poland ministers of 200 nations finally reached consensus on rules to implement the 2015 Paris climate agreement. The Paris accord aims to limit rise in global atmospheric temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial revolution levels. The concerns of developing nations including India and least developed nations on funding for carbon credit were finally addressed.

Railways Virtual Educational Expeditions - Railways has tied up with Google's education initiative to create and deliver virtual educational expeditions using 3-D imaging and virtual tours of its prominent heritage places. Railways is considering providing virtual reality glasses to passengers on rent so that they can have a glimpse of the sites without actually being there physically. It is also planning to collaborate with schools and NGOs to take the glasses to classrooms. In the first phase, virtual expeditions are being created for Kalka Shimla Railway (KSR) and CSMT, Mumbai -- both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
