GSAT 7A Satellites Launched
GSAT 7A Satellites Launched - The GSLV F 11 carrying 2250 kilogram GSAT 7A was successfully launched from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh by ISRO. GSAT-7A is meant for augmenting the existing communication capabilities of satellites utilised by the Indian Air Force.

Strategy for New India @75- The Niti Aayog unveiled a strategy document with an aim to accelerate growth to 8 per cent and propel the country towards a USD 4-trillion economy by 2022-23 and USD 5-trillion economy by 2030. The NITI Aayog released ‘Strategy for New India @75’ which defines clear objectives for 2022-23. Independent India will turn 75 on August 15, 2022.

UN Human Rights Prize - Late human rights activist, Asma Jahangir was awarded with the UN Human Rights Prize 2018, posthumously. Asma Jahangir was announced as one of the four winners of this prestigious prize. Other winners were women's rights activist of Tanzania Rebeca Gyumi; activist for the rights of indigenous Brazilian communities Joenia Wapichana and Ireland's human rights organisation ‘Front Line Defenders’.

Global Gender Gap Report - The World Economic Forum released the Global Gender Gap Report 2018, reviewing 149 countries on the basis of their progress towards gender parity. This year, the Gender Gap Index was topped by Iceland for the 10th consecutive year. India was ranked 108th in the Global Gender Gap Index 2018, same as it was ranked in 2017.

President Rule in Jammu and Kashmir - President’s rule has been imposed in Jammu and Kashmir, the first time since 1996. The state was placed under Governor’s rule in June after the BJP pulled out of an alliance with the PDP. The Governor’s rule ended on December 19. The Governor, Satya Pal Malik, last month, dissolved the Legislative Assembly.

Surrogacy Act Passed in Lok Sabha - Lok Sabha passed the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill 2016, aimed at banning commercial surrogacy to protect women from exploitation. The intending couple must be Indian citizens and married for at least five years with at least one of them being infertile. Surrogacy is allowed from a "close relative" only. Singles, homosexuals and live-in couples cannot apply for surrogacy. Besides, couples who already have children will also not be allowed to opt for surrogacy.

India-ROK Joint Commission Meeting - External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Foreign Affairs Minister of South Korea Kang Kyung-wha co-chaired the 9th India-ROK (Republic of Korea) Joint Commission meeting. Ms. Kyung-wha arrived in New Delhi on a two-day visit to India. Both sides agreed to raise the quantum of the bilateral trade to 50 billion dollars by the year 2030.

Oil Import From Iran - India will use escrow accounts of five Iranian banks held with UCO Bank Ltd. to deposit money for oil purchases from the Middle East producer to overcome U.S. sanctions. Iran will use part of the deposits for purchasing essential goods from India. The payment mechanism will allow India to continue oil purchases despite US sanctions.
