Aero India 2019 - Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the 12th biennial edition of International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition ‘Aero India 2019’ at Air Force Station Yelahanka, Bengaluru. For the first time, the 2019 edition of Aero India combines the defence and civil aviation segments into a holistic event with the co-involvement of the defence and civil aviation ministries.

Mohammed bin Salman Visited India - Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was on a one-day state visit to India. He met PM and President of India. Breaking protocol, Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the airport. The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud is also the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Saudi Arabia.

Recapitalisation of PSB - The government has approved the disbursal of a recapitalisation package of Rs 48,239 crore for 12 public sector banks. Towards this, a total of Rs 15,982 crore is to be disbursed to Allahabad Bank and Corporation Bank. Bank of India and Bank of Maharashtra, which recently exited the PCA category, are to receive a total of Rs 4,843 crore. The bulk of this (Rs 4,638 crore) is allocated for Bank of India. Four of the non-PCA banks (Punjab National Bank, Union Bank, Andhra Bank and Syndicate Bank) will get a total of Rs 14,879 crore. The largest share of this, of Rs 5,908 crore, will go to PNB.

UNSC Condemn Pulwama Attack - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) issued a statement condemning the Pulwama attack and underlining the need to hold those responsible accountable. Significantly Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) has been named on the statement as having taken responsibility for the attack.

Pakistan Banned Hafiz Saeed - Pakistan banned the 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed-led Jamat-ud-Dawa and its charity wing Falah-e-Insaniat Foundation, amid intense global pressure to rein in the militant groups following the Pulwama terror attack that killed 40 CRPF soldiers. The US Department of the Treasury has designated its chief Saeed as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, and the US, since 2012, has offered a USD 10 million reward for information that brings Saeed to justice.

Indus Water Treaty - In the aftermath of the Pulwama terror attack that took place last week, the Narendra Modi Government decided to stop their share of the water that was flowing into Pakistan. India has planned to divert the flow of its share of water to Pakistan from rivers under the Indus Water Treaty, for the welfare of the people living in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. Central Minister Nitin Gadkari said the construction of dam has started at Shahpur- Kandi on Ravi river. Moreover, UJH project will store our share of water for use in J&K and the balance water will flow from 2nd Ravi-BEAS Link to provide water to other basin states. As per the Indus Waters Treaty, India has full rights over the waters of the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas and Sutlej). In return, India had to let the western rivers–Indus, Chenab and Jhelum–flow “unrestricted” to Pakistan.

Merger of Three PSB - Bank of Baroda said the merger of Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with itself would be effective from April 1 as per the scheme of amalgamation approved by the government. Besides, the board of the bank fixed March 11, 2019, as record date for issuing and allotting equity shares of the Bank of Baroda to the shareholders of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank. This scheme may be called the Amalgamation of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda Scheme, 2019.

US Deploying Space Force - US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to establish its Space Force as a new armed service within the Department of Air Force. The Space Force will include both combat and combat support functions to enable prompt and sustained offensive and defensive space operations in all domains. It will be organized, trained, and equipped to meet and protect the US national interests in the space, consistent with international laws.

Tejas Got Final Operational Clearance - India's first self-made fighter jet, Light Combat Aircraft Tejas MK I (LCA Tejas) received the Final Operational Clearance for induction into the Indian Air Force (IAF) as a fully-weaponised fighter jet. The formal declaration of Final Operational Clearance (FOC) of the aircraft was made by Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Secretary of Defence (R&D).

EPFO Proposed Higher Interest Rate - The Central Board of Trustees of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) recommended raising the interest rate on PF deposits for its 5 crore subscribers to 8.65% for 2018-19, up from 8.55% in the previous year. However, the hike by the EPFO comes at time when interest rates set by the Reserve Bank of India are moving in the downward direction.

FDI Decreased - Foreign direct investment (FDI) into India contracted by 7% to $33.49 billion during April-December in the current fiscal. Foreign fund inflows during April-December 2017-18 stood at $35.94 billion. The key sectors that received the maximum foreign investment are computer software and hardware and telecommunications. Singapore was the largest source of FDI with $12.97 billion inflow.

Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan - The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the launch of ‘Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan’ (KUSUM) with the objective of providing financial and water security to farmers. The Central Government will provide a total financial support of Rs 34,422 crore for the scheme.
