Consumer Protection Bill
Consumer Protection Bill
Consumer Protection Bill - Lok Sabha passed the Consumer Protection Bill, 2018 that seeks to replace the Consumer Protection Act, 1986.  It seeks to establish Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions at District, State and National levels. The district Commissions are authorised to look into complaints involving claims worth one crore rupees. The State Commissions’ limit is to be increased from one crore rupees to 15 crore rupees. Complaints over and above that limit would be handled by the National Commission. The penalty and jail term have been linked to impact of adulterated products on human health with a proposal for seven years to life imprisonment and at least Rs 10 lakh fine in case of death caused by any adulterated products.

Following the merger, the board of IDFC Bank approved the appointment of V Vaidyanathan, founder and chairman of Capital First Ltd, as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the merged entity.

Jinnah House in Mumbai - India strongly rejected Pakistan’s claim of ownership of the Jinnah House in Mumbai and said the property belongs to it. The Jinnah House on Malabar Hill in Mumbai was designed by architect Claude Batley in European style and Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah lived there in the late 1930s. Pakistan has been demanding that the property be handed over to it for housing its Mumbai consulate.

Capital Infusion in Public Sector Bank - Government said that there will be 83000 crore capital infusion in better-performing banks under the watchlist of the RBI to take them out of the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA). Under the Rs 2.11 lakh crore bank recapitalisation plan, better-performing banks will be given capital to meet the RBI-mandated CRAR of 9%, NPA of 6% and other parameters.

Ban on Single-Use Plastics - After Maharastra and Uttar Pradesh, European Union has also decided to put a ban on single-use plastics items like straws, plastic plates, drink stirrers, cutlery and cotton swabs, in order to combat plastic pollution that threatens oceans and marine life. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is pushing a plan to end the use of single-use plastic in India completely by the end of 2022.
