Agni-IV Missile Test Fired - India successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable long-range Inter Continental Ballistic Missile Agni-IV, with a strike range of 4,000 km.  The test was part of a user trial by the Army. The strategic surface-to-surface missile was flight tested from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Dr Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast.

Tsunami in Indonesia - In Indonesia, the death toll from a volcano-triggered tsunami has risen to 222, with more than 800 people injured. A tsunami killed people on the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra following an underwater landslide believed caused by the erupting Anak Krakatau volcano.

World Economic Forum - Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will travel to Davos, Switzerland next month for the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting, which would also be attended by three chief ministers, including Madhya Pradesh’s Kamal Nath. Microsoft’s Indian-origin CEO Satya Nadella and World Bank President Jim Yong Kim will be among the co-chairs of the 2019 edition of this annual congregation of world leaders from January 21-25.

Information Fusion Centre - Indian Ocean Region - Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched the Information Fusion Centre - Indian Ocean Region, IFC-IOR at the Information Management and Analysis Centre, IMAC in Gurugram. Objective of having an IFC-IOR is more for partners, equals to work towards keeping the global commons safe and democratically available for all. IFC - IOR shall be a collaborative construct that will work with partners, countries as well as international agencies to enhance maritime security and safety.

Vedangi Kulkarni - Indian woman Vedangi Kulkarni has become the fastest Asian to cycle the globe.  Vedangi completed 29,000 kilometers' distance required to qualify as bicycling across the globe. She spent 159 days in 14 countries. British adventurer Jenny Graham is the fastest woman to have cycled the globe in 124 days this year.

Russia Will Stop Soviet Era Nuclear Plant - Russia's nuclear power company Rosatom Corporation said that a Soviet-built nuclear reactor has been shut down after 45 years of service. The state-controlled Rosatom Corporation said that Reactor No. 1 at the Leningrad nuclear power plant has been taken out of operation as planned. It said it will take until 2023 to fully unload its uranium fuel.
