Election in Bangladesh - Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League party won controversial general election, Hasina's alliance easily crossed the 151 seats required to form a government. India has sent three observers for parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. Chief Election Commission of Bangladesh had sent an invitation to New Delhi in this regard.

Modi Renamed Three Islands - Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced renaming of three islands of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago as a tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The Ross Island was renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, the Neil Island as Shaheed Dweep and the Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep. On this day in 1943, Bose had suggested that Andaman and Nicobar Islands be renamed Shahid and Swaraj Dweep. Mr. Modi released a commemorative stamp, its first-day cover and a Rs 75 coin.

Kartarpur Corridor - Pakistan government will allow Indian Sikhs to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib through the proposed Kartarpur Corridor in 15-member groups and will not issue permits to more than 500 pilgrims per day. The draft of the proposals mentions that each pilgrim will also have to carry his passport and security clearance certificate from the Indian government in English.

Fifty Railway Station Restructured - Fifty world-class railway stations — with concourses modelled on airport-like swanky retail spaces for commuters to wait — will be completed by the Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) by 2022. Phase I of the Habibganj railway station in Madhya Pradesh, being redeveloped on the lines of Germany’s Heidelberg station in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode, will be the first to be commissioned in February next.

NPA Dropped in PSB - Non-performing assets (NPAs) of public sector banks (PSBs) dropped by Rs 23,860 crore in the first half of the current fiscal from a peak of Rs 9.62 lakh crore in March 2018, in a sign that the worst is behind, according to financial services secretary Rajiv Kumar.

ATMs Declined - The number of ATMs in the country declined marginally by 1,300 to 2.07 lakh in the financial year 2017-18, the Reserve Bank of India report showed. The total number of ATMs declined from 208,354 in FY17 to 207,052 due to several reasons. The central bank in its annual report on ‘Trend and Progress of Banking in India’ said that ATMs were closed ‘primarily’ due to branch rationalisation by a few public sector banks.

Trade War Eased - US President Donald Trump said “big progress” is being made on trade talks with China, following a long telephonic conversation with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The US has imposed punitive tariffs on Chinese goods worth USD 250 billion per year. In retaliation, China imposed tariffs on USD 110 billion of American goods. A standstill agreement reached between Trump and Xi on the margins of the G20 summit at Buenos Aires in November 30 and December 1 deferred the imposition of tit-for-tat tariffs by the two countries till March 1 to allow for negotiations.

Currently, intaglio printing-based identification marks are present in the banknotes of Rs 100 and above for helping the visually challenged.
