GSAT-31 Satellite Launched 
GSAT-31 Satellite Launched - Indian Space Research Organisation’s latest communication satellite, GSAT-31 was successfully launched by launch vehicle Ariane 5 from the spaceport in French Guiana. The launch vehicle Ariane 5 VA-247 lifted off from Kourou Launch Base in Guiana Space Center carrying two telecommunications satellites - Saudi Geostationary Satellite and ISRO’s GSAT-31.

The Summit comes less than a year after the two leaders held a historic meeting in Singapore in June 2018.

Linkage of PAN and Aadhaar - The Supreme Court has said that linkage of Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar is mandatory for filing of Income Tax returns. A Bench comprising Justices A.K. Sikri and S. Abdul Nazeer said the top court has already decided the matter and upheld the Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act 1961.

100 % VVPAT Machine For Lok Sabha Election - The Election Commission informed the Madras High Court that it had made it clear way back in 2017 that there shall be 100% use of the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system during the Lok Sabha election this year to gain voter confidence. VVPAT allowed every voter to see a printed slip for seven seconds to verify and confirm that the vote cast had gone to the candidate of his or her choice. The system would be used fully during the Lok Sabha election.

Vande Bharat Express - Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the much-awaited Train 18 or Vande Bharat Express between Delhi and Varanasi on February 15 next week. Vande Bharat Express is India’s fastest engine-less train at 180 kmph and is expected to replace the Shatabdi Express trains . First Vande Bharat Express will take 8 hours to travel the over 770 kilometres distance between Delhi and Varanasi.

Six Waterdromes - Under the third phase of UDAN scheme, government has awarded proposals for constructing six waterdromes in the country that will be used by seaplanes for ferrying passengers. These are Guwahati River Front, Nagarjuna Sagar, Sabarmati River Front, Shatrunjay Dam, Statue of Unity and Umrangso Reservoir.

Penalty on Syndicate Bank and Axis Bank - The Reserve Bank of India has slapped an Rs1-crore penalty on Syndicate Bank and Rs20 lakh on Axis Bank for violating norms. The penalty on Syndicate Bank is due to non-compliance with the directions regarding frauds and risk management systems. Axis Bank was fined for contravention of the directions on detection and impounding of counterfeit notes and installation of note sorting machines.

Act Amended To Ban Unregulated Deposit - The Union Cabinet approved the official amendments to an Act named Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill, 2018 that classifies any deposit scheme not registered with the government as an offence and bans it. The Bill creates three different types of offences: (i) running of unregulated deposit schemes, (ii) fraudulent default in regulated deposit schemes, and (iii) wrongful inducement in relation to unregulated deposit schemes.

Redevelopment Plan For Dharavi - Seclink, the Dubai-based infrastructure company, has bagged the project to redevelop Asia’s largest slum settlement, Dharavi, in Mumbai. An empowered committee of secretaries, under Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar Jain, accepted the group’s bid to redevelop the 2.40 sq km sprawl, which is home to over 60,000 families. With an estimated cost of over Rs 26,000 crore, the Dharavi makeover project is the biggest brownfield redevelopment project in India.

Committee For SC and ST - The Maharashtra government constituted a committee to review various schemes being implemented for the welfare of tribals in the state. The 17-member committee will be headed by former MLA and Shramjeevi Sanghatna President, Vivek Pandit. It will undertake the study of various works done for providing employment opportunities, minimum wages and proper livelihood to tribals.

Penalty on Uttar Pradesh - The National Green Tribunal has imposed a penalty of Rs 25 lakh on the Uttar Pradesh government for its failure to stop discharge of dirty water into Upper Ganga canal. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said adequate steps have not been taken for proper waste management and its treatment.

# Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development scheme of Prasar Bharti. An amount of 1 thousand 54 Crore rupees have been approved for a three year period till 2020. 
# CCEA also approved the creation of Agri-Market infrastructure fund for development and upgradation of Gramin Agriculture Markets. A corpus of 2 thousand crore rupees will be created with NABARD.
# The Cabinet has approved amendments to the Cinematograph Act, 1952 to tackle film piracy and Copyright infringement.
