OPEC will Cut Petroleum Production
OPEC will Cut Petroleum Production - The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies agreed to cut oil output by 12 lakh barrels a day to boost global oil markets. OPEC, the group of 14 nations, will cut crude oil output by 8 lakh barrels per day, while Russia and its allied producers would slash around 4 lakh barrels. The agreement is set to be implemented from next month. OPEC and its partners together account for around half of global output.

Shahpurkandi Dam - The Centre approved implementation of the Shahpurkandi Dam project on the Ravi in Punjab. The move will allow India to use the water which at present goes waste flowing through the Madhopur Headworks downstream to Pakistan. Once completed in June 2022, it will improve irrigation potential of farmers in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab. Under Indus Water Treaty 1960, India has full rights for utilisation of waters of the three eastern rivers namely Ravi, Beas and Satluj.

Half Global Population is Online - For the first time, more than half of the global population is online. The United Nations said around 3.9 billion people are now using the Internet. The UN agency for Information and Communication Technologies, ITU, said that by the end of this year, 51.2 per cent of people around the world will be using the Internet. The report also showed that the number of mobile-cellular telephone subions is now greater than the global population.

Freight Village in Varanasi - The Ministry of Shipping approved the development of Rs 156 crore Freight Village in Varanasi, adjoining the Inland Waterways Terminal on River Ganga. The Varanasi Freight Village will be developed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India. A Freight Village is a designated area where facilities for various modes of transportation, distribution of goods and other logistics are available in a synchronised manner on a large scale.

Central Assistance for Natural Disaster - The Centre released disaster relief assistance worth over Rs 3,700 crore to three states, including Kerala which was hit by massive floods in August and will get the lion’s share of Rs 3,048 crore as additional assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). While Andhra Pradesh, affected by cyclone ‘Titli’ earlier this year, has been assigned Rs 539.52 crore, Rs 131.16 crore will be given to Nagaland which had witnessed floods.

In fact, the average life expectancy in India would have been 1.7 years higher if the air pollution level were less than the minimal level. This report was released by the Indian Council of Medical Research.

Guidelines for Online Travel Aggregators - The Union Ministry of Tourism has formulated the guidelines for approval and re-approval of Online Travel Aggregators (OTA) to ensure adequate safeguards against deficiency of service, alternate arrangements and punitive deterrence. An Online Travel Aggregator is an intermediary or an agent selling travel products and services such as the airlines, car rental, cruise lines, hotels and accommodation, railways and vacation packages on behalf of suppliers using internet as a medium.
