Gita Gopinath - India born Gita Gopinath joined the International Monetary Fund as its Chief Economist. She is the first woman and second Indian after Raghuram rajan to occupy the top IMF post. Gopinath is the 11th chief economist of the IMF.

124th Constitution Amendment Bill
124th Constitution Amendment Bill – 2019 - The Lok Sabha passed Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill - 2019 allowing 10% quota in employment and education for the general category candidates who belong to the economically weaker sections. The bill cleared by majority of the members (319) voting for it, and four against. The 10% reservation will be over and above the 50% stipulated by the Supreme Court and is expected to benefit a huge section of upper castes, including Brahmins, Rajputs (Thakurs), Jats, Marathas and Bhumihars and trading castes like Kapus and Kammas.

Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019 - Lok Sabha passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, which seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants eligible for citizenship. The Bill seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from neighbouring countries. The bill will provide Indian citizenship to the Hindus, Christians, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis and Buddhists from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh after six years of residing India rather than ongoing 12 years even when they do not have any document. Mizoram and Meghalaya governments have opposed the bill by adopting a resolution against it in their respective Cabinet meetings.

Alok Verma - The Supreme Court reinstated Alok Verma as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director, three months after the government divested him of his powers and sent him on forced leave. The bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SK Kaul and KM Joseph questioned the overnight decision to send the CBI's top two officials Alok Verma and Rakesh Asthana on leave.

Erna Solberg - Prime Minister of Norway, Erna Solberg inaugurated a new green compound at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi. Solberg is on an official visit to India. This green embassy can serve as an inspiration for the shared efforts to achieve the green transition and the Sustainable Development Goals. The two countries also signed a MoU for holding an India-Norway Ocean Dialogue.

Committee For Digital Payment - The Reserve Bank of India has appointed a five-member panel headed by Nandan Nilekani to suggest ways to improve digital payments. The committee will submit its report in 90 days. Other Member are - Former Deputy Governor of RBI H.R. Khan, former Vijaya Bank MD and CEO Kishore Sansi, former Secretary of Information and Technology Aruna Sharma and Sanjay Jain, Chief Innovation Officer, Center for Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship (CIIE), IIM Ahmedabad.

IPL From 23 March - This year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) will be held in India from March 23. The BCCI confirmed that the IPL will be staged in India despite the general elections. Panel decided to advance the IPL dates on account of the ICC World Cup to be held in England from May 30.

Benefits of FASTag - FASTag, an RFID device for seamless movement through toll plazas may soon come in handy to buy petrol and pay parking fees. The NHAI is working on various plans to expand the benefits of FASTags. Recently, NHAI has announced that FASTags will be available at petrol pumps to make it easier for commuters to purchase them. A FASTag is a device, affixed on the windscreen of a vehicle that employs RFID (radio frequency identification) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it.

It will hear the matter on January 10. The Bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, comprises Justices S.A. Bobde, N.V. Ramana, U.U. Lalit and D.Y. Chandrachud.

Foreign Ministers of Australia and Spain Visited India - External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met her Australian and Spanish counterparts in New Delhi. Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, who is on her maiden visit to India, will give the Ministerial Address on ‘The Arrival of Global Politics' at the Raisina Dialogue. Mrs Swaraj also met Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell Fontelles. The two leaders had a good discussion on various aspects of bilateral relations, including trade and investment, security and renewable energy.

Guatemala Withdraws From UN Agency - Guatemala has said it is withdrawing from UN-backed anti-corruption commission. It has given the UN body's staff 24 hours to leave the country. President Jimmy Morales accused the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala, commonly known as CICIG, of polarising the country and putting its security at risk.

A state performance grading will be done wherein the states will be marked out of 1,000 scores on 70 parameters. It will give the correct picture of where every states. There will be a fair competition to improve each other's performances.
