1.         The Reserve Bank of India on August 1, 2018 released its Third Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement 2018-19. Six members Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to Increase in the policy Repo Rate by 25 basis points to 6.50 percent. RBI retained the GDP forecast for the current fiscal at 7.4 percent.

3.         Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away on August 16, 2018 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Vajpayee will be accorded a state funeral at Smriti Sthal, Delhi. A seven-day national mourning has been announced by the Central Government.
4.         Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the first non-Congress Prime Minister to serve a full five-year term. Vajpayee served three terms as the Prime Minister of India - first term in 1996 for just 13 days, second term in 1998-199 for 13 months and third term for full five years from 1999-2004. Atal Bihari Vajpayee served as the Member of Parliament for Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for ten times, and was twice elected to the Rajya Sabha. Vajpayee was among the founding members of Bharatiya Jana Sangh. Vajpayee restructured the Jana Sangh into the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980. Following Janata Party's victory in the 1977 General Elections, he became the Minister of External Affairs in Prime Minister Morarji Desai's cabinet. As a foreign minister, Vajpayee was the first person to deliver a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in Hindi in 1977. In 1975, Vajpayee was arrested along with several other opposition leaders during the Internal Emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of the Indian National Congress party. He was in jail till 1977. In May 1998, India conducted five underground nuclear tests in Pokhran desert in Rajasthan. He inaugurated Delhi-Lahore bus service in February 1999 and signed Lahore Declaration with Nawaz Sharif, the then PM of Pakistan. Vajpayee's birthday 25 December is observed as Good Governance Day every year.
5.         The 4th BIMSTEC Summit concluded in Kathmandu on August 31, 2018 with the signing and adoption of the Kathmandu Declaration by all the seven members. Theme 2018 is 'Towards a Peaceful Prosperous, and Sustainable Bay of Bengal Region'. During the Summit, foreign ministers of BIMSTEC member countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Establishment of BIMSTEC Grid Interconnection. Current chair of BIMSTEC, Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli handed over the Chairmanship of the next BIMSTEC Summit – 2019 to Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena. Hence, Sri Lanka will be conducting the fifth summit of the BIMSTEC.
6.         Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi was conferred with Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award on the occasion of 74th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. 
7.         President Ram Nath Kovind reassigned the Finance and Corporate Affairs portfolios to Union Minister Arun Jaitley.  The temporary charge of both the ministries was given to Union Minister Piyush Goyal as Jaitley had undergone a kidney transplant.
8.         The 11th World Hindi Conference was inaugurated in Mauritius with the theme ‘Hindi World and Indian Culture’. The conference was inaugurated by the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Praveen Kumar Jagannath in Port Louis. Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj attended the event. 
9.         Exercise Pitch Black 2018, a biennial multi-national large force employment warfare exercise, was hosted by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) from July 24, 2018 to Aug 18, 2018 in Darwin, Australia. 16 nations participated in the exercise including India.
10.     Indigenously developed Helicopter launched Anti-Tank Guided Missile ‘HELINA’ was successfully flight tested from Army Helicopter in the ranges of Pokhran. The test was conducted by the DRDO and the Indian Army. HELINA missile is the helicopter launched version of the NAG Missile.
11.     President Ram Nath Kovind presented the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for the years 2013-2017. Winners of the award are - Dr Najma Heptullah (2013), Hukum Dev Narayan (2014), Ghulam Nabi Azad (2015), Dinesh Trivedi (2016), Bhartruhari Mahtab (2017).
12.     The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) unveiled the details of the Gaganyaan mission for manned space flight before 2022. The Gaganyaan mission was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his 72nd Independence Day speech. ISRO Chairman, Dr K. Sivan said that the programme will make India the fourth nation after USA, Russia and China in the world to launch a Human Spaceflight Mission.
13.     RBI has completed the processing of demonetised Rs 500 and 1000 banknotes; 99.3 percent of the notes worth Rs 15.3 lakh crore have been returned to banks. The difference between the outstanding currency notes in circulation before demonetisation and the currency notes returned to the RBI is Rs 10,720 crore.
14.     India’s first flight powered by biofuel landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on August 27, 2018. The Spicejet flight, featuring a latest generation Q400 aircraft, had been flagged off from the Dehradun airport by Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat. The biofuel was developed by Indian Institute of Petroleum- Dehradun. The flight was powered with a blend of 75% air turbine fuel (ATF) and 25% biojet fuel. 
15.     Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, J P Nadda announced that 29 States and Union Territories (UTs) signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of on Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna (AB-PMJAY). On the same occasion, J P Nadda also launched the logo of the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna.
16.     PepsiCo's India-born CEO Indra Nooyi will be honoured with the Game Changer of the Year award by a global cultural organisation Asia Society. 
17.     Centre appointed renowned scientist, Dr G Satheesh Reddy, as Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)
18.     The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman accorded approval for procurement for the Services amounting to approximately Rs. 46,000 crores. The DAC approved procurement of 111 Utility Helicopters for the Indian Navy at a cost of over Rs. 21,000 crores.
19.     Exercise Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Peace Mission 2018, the latest in 'Peace Mission' series formally started at Chebarkul, Russia. The 8 member nations of SCO are China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, and Pakistan.
20.     Assocham appointed former bureaucrat Uday Kumar Varma as its new Secretary General.
21.     A new European satellite named 'Aeolus' using advanced laser technology to track global winds and improve weather forecasts has been successfully put into orbit on a Vega rocket from French Guyana. 
22.     K S Srinivas has taken over as Chairman of Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA). 
23.     Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has been re-elected for a five-year term.
24.     Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) has proposed to set up five-member committee to suggest changes to JEE (Advanced) in the wake of an inadequate number of candidates qualifying entrance test this year. The committee will be headed by IIT-Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthy.
25.     SK Arora was awarded with prestigious World No Tobacco Day 2017 Award of the World Health Organisation (WHO). World No Tobacco Day is observed on 31 May.
26.     The 18th edition of Asian Games is scheduled to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, 2018. The Indian contingent at the games will be led by Javelin Thrower Neeraj Chopra, who will be India's flag-bearer at the glittering opening ceremony.
27.     The Union Government has constituted a 21-member Prime Minister's Science Technology and Innovation Advisory Committee (PM-STIAC) headed by K Vijay Raghavan to advise Prime Minister Narendra Modi on matters related to science, technology and innovations.
28.     India on August 29, 2018 observed the National Sports Day 2018 to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand who was born on August 29, 1905.
29.     Mario Abdo Benitez was sworn in as the new President of Paraguay for a five-year term.
30.     India has asked WhatsApp to set up a local entity in the country and find a technological solution to trace the origin of fake messages. The information was shared by the Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad after his meeting with Whatsapp CEO Chris Daniels in New Delhi. 
31.     Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s 21 members-cabinet took the oath on August 20, 2018. President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath. Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi will be the country’s new Foreign Minister. 
32.     NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Dr. Rajiv Kumar, and Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant, unveiled a series of events to take place in the ‘Mobility Week’ from 31 August to 6 September 2018, in the run-up to MOVE: The Global Mobility Summit 2018 on 7 and 8 September 2018 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
33.     Exercise KAKADU, multilateral regional maritime exercise started in Port of Darwin, Australia. This exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and supported by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
34.     Scott Morrison has been elected the new Prime Minister of Australia.
35.     Joint military exercise Maitree 2018 between India and Thailand was conducted in Thailand from August 6 to 19, 2018. 
36.     The G20 Digital Economy Ministerial Meeting was held in Salta, Argentina. It took place as part of Sherpa Track for 2018 G20 Leaders’ Summit, which is to be hosted by Argentina by end of 2018. The theme of the meeting was 'Building consensus for fair and sustainable development'. 
37.     Alphabet Inc’s Google has partnered with four Indian banks to grant consumer loans online. The U.S. search giant has teamed with HDFC Bank Ltd., ICICI Bank Ltd., Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. and Federal Bank Ltd. to offer instant, pre-approved loans to customers.
38.     The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) constituted a group of experts from health and nutrition sector to look into the issue of food labelling. The expert panel will be headed by B Sesikeran.
39.     Public sector non-life insurance firm United India Insurance Company announced the appointment of S Gopakumar as its Director and General Manager with immediate effect. 
40.     Former Lok Sabha speaker and 10-time MP of the Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee passed away after suffering a heart attack. 
41.     Kofi Annan, former UN Secretary-General passed away after a short illness. Annan served two terms as the Secretary General of United Nations from 1997 to 2006. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.
42.     British author V S Naipaul has died. Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul who was born in Trinidad wrote more than 30 books and won the Nobel Literature Prize in 2001.
43.     Former Indian cricket captain Ajit Wadekar passed away after a prolonged illness.
44.     Chhattisgarh Governor Balramji Das Tandon passed away following a cardiac arrest. 
45.     DMK patriarch Muthuvel Karunanidhi, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, passed away on August 7, 2018 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. 
46.     India’s Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve has been added to UNESCO's list of World Network of Biosphere Reserve (WNBR). The Khangchendzonga reserve will be India's 11th internationally designated WNBR.
47.     United States government has awarded the Legion of Merit (Degree of Commander) to General Dalbir Singh Suhag (Retired), of the Indian Army. 
48.     Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the second phase of the FAME India scheme. The scheme offers incentives for mass adoption of electric vehicles with an outlay of Rs 5,500 crore. The second phase of the scheme spanning five years will offer a subsidy to all categories of electric vehicles.
49.     Former President Pranab Mukherjee launched the National Electoral Transformation  (NETA) mobile application to rate Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). 'Neta - Leaders' Report Card' App, the brainchild of Pratham Mittal, is a platform where voters can review and rate their elected representatives and hold them accountable as well.
50.     Veteran journalist, author and human rights activist, Kuldip Nayar passed away. Nayar, a former editor of the Indian Express, was also the author of 15 books including “Beyond the Lines”, “India after Nehru” and “Emergency Retold”. Nayar also served as High Commissioner of India to the UK in 1990 and as a Member of the Rajya Sabha.

62.     Chief Election Commissioner OP Rawat has said that Election Commission is ready for hundred per cent use of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail machines (VVPAT). 
63.     Turkey has initiated a dispute complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States for imposing additional tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Turkey. 
64.     The Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) announced phased roll-out of face recognition for carrying out Aadhaar authentication from September 15, 2018 as additional security layer. 
65.     US singer Aretha Franklin passed away recently at the age of 76. Franklin received the Grammy Award 18 times and was the first female vocalist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. 
66.     China has unveiled Chang'e 4 lunar rover to explore the far side of the moon by the end of 2018. 
67.     Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government also decided to name the proposed Bundelkhand Expressway as ‘Atal Path’.
68.     Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced on August 21 that the United Arab Emirates has promised assistance worth Rs 700 crore for the state’s reconstruction. The Union Government has, however, decided to decline all offers of financial help from foreign countries. The Union Government promised total relief of Rs 600 crore.
69.     The World Bank launched ‘bond-i' (Blockchain Operated New Debt Instrument), the world’s first bond to be created, allocated, transferred and managed by using distributed ledger technology. This two-year bond successfully raised 110 million Australian dollars (USD 80.48 million). Earlier on August 10, 2018, the World Bank mandated Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) as arranger for the bond.
70.     The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) constituted a working group headed by Yegna Priya Bharat to update the norms for insurance surveyors.
71.     India and Singapore signed the Second Protocol amending the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) to boost bilateral trade between the two countries. 
72.     The World Humanitarian Day was observed on 19 August to pay tribute to workers who risk their lives in humanitarian services.
73.     Delhi Police inducted an all-woman Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, consisting of 36 commandos – the first ever by any police force in India – for anti-terrorist operations.

77.     In the wake of Prime Minister’s vision for creating digital museums at stations using QR code, Ministry of Railway has made “digital screens” operational at 22 stations on this Independence Day.

84.     President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the International Buddhist Conclave in New Delhi. The theme of the conclave is 'Buddha Path – The Living Heritage'. The Ministerial level delegation from ASEAN countries will participate in the conclave along with delegates from 29 countries including US, UK, Germany, France and Russia. This year Japan is the partnering country for the Buddhist conclave. 
85.     Iran unveiled its first domestic fighter jet named 'KOWSAR' with President Hassan Rouhani. 
86.     Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan have made it to the Forbes’ list of World’s Highest-Paid Actors 2018, which was topped by George Clooney. Akshay and Salman made it to spot seven and nine, respectively. 
87.     The Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) became the first Indian company to cross Rs 8 trillion market capitalization. 
88.     Former India spinner Ramesh Powar was named head coach of the Indian women's national cricket team till the ICC World T20, which is scheduled to be held in November 2018.
89.     UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has chosen former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet to be the UN’s new human rights chief.
90.     JDU’s Harivansh Narayan Singh was elected as the new deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha. The NDA candidate was pitted against BK Hari Prasad, the joint candidate of the Congress-led Opposition in the voice vote.

92.     Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched a defence industrial corridor in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. Six nodal points, Agra, Aligarh, Lucknow, Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Jhansi have been identified in state for the corridor. Another defence corridor was also launched in Tamil Nadu. 
93.     The lander on the Chandrayaan-2 mission, which is scheduled to be launched in January 2019 will be named ‘Vikram’ after Vikram Sarabhai, the father of Indian space programme.
94.     Mughalsarai Railway Junction of Uttar Pradesh was renamed as Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction Railway station.
95.     The Goods and Services Tax Council formed a Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla to address various issues faced by small businesses.
96.     Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that 12 modern bio-fuel refineries worth Rs 10,000 crore will be established across the country. Government is targeting 10 per cent ethanol blending in petrol by 2022 and 20 per cent by 2030.
97.     The International Monetary Fund says India's GDP is poised to grow by 7.3 per cent in the 2018-19 fiscal and 7.5 per cent in 2019-20. 
98.     The Committee on Fair Market Conduct, headed by former law secretary T K Viswanathan, submitted its report to SEBI Chairman Ajay Tyagi.
99.     The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) released the Global Liveability Index 2018. Austria’s capital Vienna topped the list. Delhi was ranked at 112th position and Mumbai fetched 117th spot.
100. The Supreme Court approved a proposal to have hologram-based coloured stickers on vehicles which would indicate the nature of fuel being used in Delhi- National Capital Region (NCR). The apex court ruling allows for blue stickers to be used for vehicles running on petrol and CNG, and orange stickers for diesel vehicles. The colour coding will help authorities identify vehicles running on high-polluting fuel from specified routes on particular days.

Maharashtra’s Pune, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai rounded the top three of Ease of Living Index 2018. The bottom 3 cities in the list are Rampur, Kohima and Patna.
102. The Union Cabinet approved the signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Indonesia on health cooperation.
103. The Union Cabinet approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Korea on Trade Remedy Cooperation.
104. The Union Cabinet was apprised of joint issue of Postage Stamps on India-South Africa on the theme, "20 Years of Strategic Partnership between India and South Africa".

114. The US Defence Department will create a Space Force as the sixth branch of the military by 2020, Vice President Mike Pence announced.
115. NITI Aayog’s International Conference on “Sustainable Growth through Material Recycling: Policy Prescriptions” was inaugurated in New Delhi.
116. South Sudan's President Salva Kiir and rebel opposition leader Riek Machar have signed a peace deal to share power in a transitional government, ending a five-year civil war.
117. The 24th World Congress of Philosophy (WCP) was held in Beijing, China from August 13 to 17, 2018. Its theme was “Learning To Be Human”. 
118. Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel was given the additional charge of Chhattisgarh following the death of Chhattisgarh Governor Balramji Dass Tandon.

Union Minister of Commerce & Industry and Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu is leading the Indian delegation for the meeting. The Minister will participate in the meeting consisting of 10 ASEAN countries and six ASEAN FTA partners namely, India, China, Japan, Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

190. Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari signed an MoU with six states (Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi) for the construction of the Lakhwar multi-purpose project in the upper Yamuna basin to deal with water crisis. Under the agreement, the 204-metres high project will be constructed near Uttarakhand's Lohari village with live storage capacity of 330.66 million cubic metres (MCM). The total project is worth Rs 3,966.51 crore.
