Current Affairs of June Month 

1.         Reserve Bank of India released its Second Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement 2018-19. Six members Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to increase the policy Repo Rate under the Liquidity Adjustment Facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 6.25 percent. The RBI retained GDP growth for 2018-19 at 7.4 percent. The committee revised the retail inflation estimate to 4.8-4.9 percent for the first half of 2018-19 and 4.7 percent in the second half.

2.         Mahesh Kumar Jain, MD & CEO of IDBI Bank was appointed as the fourth deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India for three years. The fourth deputy governor’s post has been vacant since SS Mundra retired on July 31, 2017.
3.         The ICICI Bank board has appointed ICICI Prudential Life Insurance CEO Sandeep Bakhshi as whole-time director and chief operating officer (COO), creating a new top position at India’s second largest private bank, to steer all its businesses. Chanda Kochhar, ICICI Bank’s managing director and CEO will remain on leave until a committee investigating allegations of impropriety completes its work.
4.         Sharad Kumar has been appointed vigilance commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) for a term of four years.
5.         Arvind Saxena has been appointed to serve as the acting Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Saxena would be succeeding incumbent Vinay Mittal who completes his term on June 19.
6.         The 44th summit of the Group of Seven (G7), which was held from June 8–9, 2018 in Quebec, Canada, ended in complete disarray with US President Donald Trump blasting off host Canada and abruptly retracting his support for a joint statement, signed by every nation in the group. The summit was overshadowed by differences over trade tariff disputes and calls to readmit Russia. 
7.         Bindeshwar Pathak, founder of Sulabh International, was honoured with Japan's prestigious Nikkei Asia Prize. The award was conferred to Pathak under the ‘Culture and Community’ category.
8.         Vidya Balan-starrer "Tumhari Sulu" won the Best Picture Award at the International Indian Film Academy Awards 2018 in Bangkok. Irfan Khan - Best Actor for Hindi Medium. Sridevi - Best Female Actor for "Mom". The Best Director - Saket Chowdhary for Hindi Medium.  Anupam Kher - Outstanding Achievement Award at the ceremony. Newton, which was India's official entry to Oscars this year, won the award for Best Story for director Masurkar.
9.         President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won a new five-year term in Turkey's Presidential poll. 
10.     Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi after concluding his significant and successful three-nation visit to Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. 
11.     On the first leg of 3-Nation visit, PM Modi has visited Indonesia. India and Indonesia signed 15 MoUs in the fields of defence, scientific and technological cooperation, railways and health, among others.
12.     PM Modi had arrived in Singapore after a brief halt in Malaysia where he met Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamad.
13.     Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched three Indian digital payment systems - RuPay, BHIM app and UPI by SBI at the 'Business, Innovation and Community Event' in Singapore. With the launch, India's RuPay digital payments system was linked up with Singapore's Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS). 8 agreements were signed between the two sides which covered areas as wide as military cooperation and connectivity.
14.     Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the Padma Shri award to former Singaporean diplomat Tommy Koh.
15.     The Indian economy grew 7.7% in the fourth quarter of 2017-18. The GDP had expanded 5.6%, 6.3% and 7%, in the first three quarters of 2017-18, according to the data released by Central Statistics Office.
16.     External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj begins her five-day visit to South Africa. The Minister will participate in the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting and chair the IBSA Foreign Ministers Meeting during her visit.
17.     Spanish Socialist Pedro Sanchez has been sworn in as the country's new prime minister by King Felipe.
18.     In Egypt, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi was sworn in for a second four-year term.
19.     President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to an ordinance to set up the country’s first national sports university in Manipur. 
20.     Reserve Bank of India decided to allow voluntary transition of the Urban Co-Operative Banks (UCB) into Small Finance Banks (SFB). The move is an outcome of the recommendations made by the High Powered Committee on Urban Cooperative Banks chaired by R Gandhi.

21.     India successfully test-fired indigenously developed nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-5 from the Integrated Test Range on Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island, previously known as Wheeler Island. The long-range surface-to-surface missile with a strike range of 5,000 km was fired from a mobile launcher.
22.     The Union Health Minister, J P Nadda exchanged Memorandum of Understanding with health ministers from 20 states, marking their commitment towards the launch of the Ayushman Bharat – National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM) at a Health Ministers conclave in New Delhi. The AB-NHPM will protect around 50 crore people from about 10 crore families. The scheme will enable cashless and paperless access to services up to Rs 5 lakhs per family per year. The services will be available for the beneficiary families at the point of service in both public and private empanelled hospitals across India.
23.     Russia successfully launched Glonass-M positioning satellite on board of Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket from the Plesetsk space centre in Mirny, Arkhangelsk Oblast. The satellite is part of GLONASS (Russian acronym for Global Navigation Satellite System) Network which provides real-time positioning data for surface.
24.     The indigenously upgraded artillery gun Dhanush successfully completed final user trials at Pokhran field firing range. Dhanush is upgraded version of Swedish 155-mm Bofors howitzers, which India procured in the mid-1980s.  It has strike range of 38 kilometres.
25.     The World Bank has approved Water Resources and River Development Ministry’s Rs 6000 crore worth central sector scheme, ‘Atal Bhujal Yojana’.
26.     West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi was given the additional charge of Tripura. Tripura Governor Tathagata Roy is on leave.
27.     Giuseppe Conte was sworn in as prime minister of Italy.
28.     US scientists have unveiled the world's most powerful and smartest scientific supercomputer named 'Summit' that can complete over 200,000 trillion calculations per second. Summit will be eight times more powerful than its previous top-ranked system, Titan.
29.     Vishwas Mandalik from Nasik and the Yoga Institute in Mumbai have been selected as recipients of the Prime Minister’s award for outstanding contribution for promotion and development of yoga for the year 2018.
30.     The 220 MW Unit-1 of Karnataka's Kaiga Generating Systems (KGS-1) set a new record of the continuous operation of 766 days, surpassing the earlier record of 765 days set by the Unit-5 of Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS-5) in 2014.
31.     Housing finance major HDFC has been ranked as the 5th biggest public company globally in the ‘consumer financial services category’ on a list compiled by Forbes magazine. In the overall list, topped by China’s banking behemoth ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China)
32.     Transport & Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari released a book ‘Water productivity mapping of major Indian crops’ published by NABARD. The book is based on a study of a team under the leadership Dr. Ashok Gulati.
33.     The World Music Day is celebrated across the world on 21 June.
34.     The Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) of India, Arvind Subramanian had resigned from the post.
35.     Microsoft has acquired Flipgrid, an education start-up with an app that lets student’s record and share videos on specific topics with their classmates.
36.     Kalki Koechlin was conferred with the French distinction of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres), for her contribution in enhancing Indo-French ties in cinema.
37.     India is the world's most dangerous country for women due to the high risk of sexual violence, according to a poll of global experts. War-torn Afghanistan and Syria ranked second and third in the Thomson Reuters Foundation survey.
38.     President of India, Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the Udyam Sangam-2018 in New Delhi. It is a step forward towards consolidating the convergence and synergy of all the government initiatives relating to MSME Sector. A portal of the Ministry of MSME called “Sampark” was also unveiled by the President. 
39.     The US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley is in India for the 2-day visit.
40.     Centre has released 340 crore rupees for flood relief work in Assam.

41.     Maharashtra government has set up a committee to study issues related to the development of a 1,000-MW floating solar power plant at Ujani dam in Solapur district. The committee will be headed by Satish Chavan.
42.     Britain’s Queen Elizabeth granted royal assent to Prime Minister Theresa May’s flagship Brexit legislation.

52.     The four first-year engineering students from Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science near Chennai, Tamil Nadu have developed the world’s lightest satellite which will be launched from a NASA facility in the US by August 2018. The students built the 4cm ‘cube’ satellite ‘Jaihind-1S’at just 33.39 grams.
53.     Social networking giant Facebook partnered with the National Commission for Women (NCW) to launch a Digital Literacy Programme (DLP). The DLP will be launched in collaboration with the Cyber Peace Foundation (CPF).

57.     In Rajasthan, a record has been set at State level yoga function in Kota on June 21, 2018 where around one lakh 60 thousand people performed yoga at one place at a same time on International Yoga Day. Representatives of Guinness World Record handed over the certificate of world record to Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje and Swami RamDev. 
58.     The World Oceans Day was observed across the world. The action focus for the 2018 World Oceans Day was ‘preventing plastic pollution and encouraging solutions for a healthy ocean’. The agenda also coincided with the theme of 2018 World Environment Day –‘Beat Plastic Pollution’.
59.     Naval ships, aircraft and personnel from India, Japan and the US have begun exercise Malabar 2018 in the western Pacific during the exercise.
60.     On June 3, 2018, the first official World Bicycle Day was celebrated. Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu flagged off a mega cycling event in New Delhi. New Delhi is one of the three cities in the world where major events are being organized to mark the day. Berlin & New York are the other two places.

61.     Reserve Bank of India is organising ‘Financial Literacy Week’ across the nation from June 4 to June 8, 2018. The week will focus on four consumer protection messages like 'know your liability' for unauthorised electronic banking transaction. Customers will be told that in case of unauthorised digital transaction if the bank is informed within 3 days, the liability of the account holder is zero.
62.     Reserve Bank of India announced to set up a Public Credit Registry, an information repository that has all loan information of individuals and corporate borrowers.
63.     Myanmar and UN agencies signed an agreement that could lead to the return of some of the 700,000 Rohingyas who are now crowded into makeshift camps in Bangladesh.
64.     The Centre has constituted a group of eminent persons to study the Special Economic Zones, SEZ Policy of India. The group will be headed by Industrialist Baba Kalyani. 
65.     The Health Ministry has barred 82 medical colleges in the country to admit students for the academic session 2018-19, based on the recommendation of the Medical Council of India. The MCI has pointed out various deficiencies such as inadequate infrastructure, faculty and resources during its inspections of these colleges.
66.     Himachal Pradesh CM Jairam Thakur flagged off a helicopter taxi service that will reduce the travel time between Shimla and Chandigarh to 20 minutes. The service is operated by Pawan Hans and can accommodate 19 persons.
67.     India is among the top five e-waste generating countries in the world besides China, the US, Japan and Germany, according to a report released by Assocham. Among states, Maharashtra contributes the largest e-waste of 19.8 percent.

70.     India will receive the first ever cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia on June 4, 2018. The shipload of LNG will be brought by state-owned gas utility GAIL India Ltd from Gazprom, a Russian supplier at Petronet LNG Ltd's import terminal in Dahej, Gujarat. India will import 2.5 million tonnes of LNG a year.

The summit was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was on a visit to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
91.     In a historic first, delegation level talks between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un began in Singapore on June 12, 2018 after 60 years. The United States has decided to provide security guarantees to North Korea, in exchange of Pyongyang's firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

93.     The United States, Mexico and Canada won the right to host the 2026 World Cup after beating Morocco in a vote by FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) member nations in Moscow. 
94.     India will host first military exercise of the BIMSTEC Countries in September 2018 in Pune, Maharashtra. The theme of the exercise includes counter-terrorism in semi-urban terrain and cordon and search.
95.     The Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) has developed a mobile-based application ‘utsonmobile' to enable cashless ticketing. The mobile app will enable booking and cancellation of unreserved tickets, issue and renewal of season and platform tickets and checking and loading of R-wallet balance.
96.     US government has approved a deal to sell the Indian military six AH-64E Apache attack helicopters for 930 million dollars. Boeing and Indian partner Tata have begun to produce Apache fuselages at a plant in India, but the recent approval concerns a direct sale of finished products from the US manufacturers.
97.     The International Conference on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) will be held in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal from June 17, 2018. The Theme of two day conference is “Sustainable Development Goals for Smart Society”.
98.     The United Nations General Assembly voted to elect Germany, Belgium, South Africa, the Dominican Republic and Indonesia for a two-year term in the Security Council with effect from January 1, 2019.

101. Gujarat has emerged as the leading state in generating e-way bills during April, May and June. The state has generated over 10.72 million inter- and intra-state e-way bills, followed by Maharashtra (8.13 million) and Karnataka (8.05 million). 
102. According to State Bank of India’s annual report for 2017-18, Axis Bank commands the largest value share of mobile banking transactions at 17. 2 per cent but Paytm tops volumes with 22 per cent.

120. Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar proposed a draft bill to repeal the University Grants Commission (UGC) and set up the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI). The Act entitled ‘Higher Education Commission of India Act, 2018.

121. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recommended stringent punishment for those adulterating food products following the Supreme Court order. Now, those adulterating food products could face life imprisonment and penalty of up to Rs 10 lakh. It suggested creation of a 'Food Safety and Nutrition Fund'.
122. Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved a proposal to set up a committee headed by E Sreedharan which will lay down standards for India’s metro rail systems in the country.

126. The Union Cabinet approved establishment of additional 6.5 Million Metric Tonne (MMT) Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) facilities at two locations - Chandikhol in Odisha and Padur in Karnataka.
127. The Union Cabinet approved the MoU between India and Singapore on cooperation in the field of urban planning and development. 
128. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the National Centre for Ageing at AIIMS, New Delhi. The centre will be developed at a cost of Rs 330 crores and shall be completed by February, 2020.
129. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) added Pakistan to its ‘grey list’ of countries involved in providing monetary assistance to terrorism and related causes. The decision was taken during FATF meeting on Money Laundering in Paris. 
130. The rupee hit the all-time low of 69.09 against the US dollar on June 28, 2018. The fall can be attributed to the week-long rise in the crude prices amid concerns of higher inflation and current account deficit.
131. A public health emergency has been declared in three Papua New Guinea (PNG) provinces as the country responds to its first polio outbreak in 18 years when it was declared free of the disease.
132. French state-run power utility EDF and American conglomerate General Electric (GE) signed strategic cooperation agreement with State-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) to build 6 EPR (European Pressurized Reactors) type nuclear reactors of capacity 1650 megawatt (MW). The reactors will be built at Jaitapur nuclear plant in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra.
133. The world's largest multilateral naval exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) will begin on June 27, 2018 in Hawaii in the Western Pacific Ocean. The two-month long biennial exercise is likely to be attended by navies of 26 countries including India. 
134. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has restricted the manufacture of Oxytocin formulations from July 2018. No private manufacturer will be allowed to manufacture the drug for domestic use. Only Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Ltd (KAPL), a public sector company, would be manufacturing this drug for domestic use. 
135. The Union Government has appointed senior bureaucrat S Ramesh as Chairman of Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).
136. India and Seychelles signed six Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to further expand bilateral ties between the two sides in various fields. These include areas of naval cooperation, cyber security, culture, development projects among others. PM Modi announced a line of credit worth for Seychelles for purchase of defence hardware. The Prime Minister also gifted Dornier Aircraft to President of Seychelles.
137. The World Food Prize 2018 was awarded to Lawrence Haddad and Dr. David Nabarro. Lawrence Haddad is British economist and Dr. David Nabarro has worked with WHO and United Nations on health and hunger issues. 
138. Remove DEBRIS Satellite was successfully deployed from International Space Station (ISS) to demonstrate a range of innovative technologies to clean up space debris orbiting Earth. The satellite was manufactured by consortium of space companies and research institutions led by Surrey Space Centre at University of Surrey, United Kingdom.
139. In a retaliatory move to the heavy tariffs imposed by the United States on imported steel and aluminium items, India has decided to raise customs duty on 29 US products including almond, walnut and pulses. The duty hike decision by India is similar to that of the European Union and China which decided to levy higher import duties on a variety of US products in retaliation to its protectionist policies.
140. President Ram Nath Kovind approved the Governor's rule in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) following the resignation of Mehbooba Mufti as Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister.

The president also reasserted plans to land astronauts on the moon again and do another human lunar landing within 10 years; and eventually on Mars.

150. Government has directed the CBSE to conduct the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) examination in all Indian languages as was being done earlier. Earlier, the CBSE had decided to remove 17 languages including Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada from the list of options for the CTET.

159. Minister for Water Resources Nitin Gadkari released Niti Aayog’s composite water management index report in New Delhi. Gujarat topped the list while Jharkhand was adjudged as the worst performer. Gujarat is followed by Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh.
160. Fitch Ratings raised India growth forecast for 2018-19 to 7.4% from 7.3% but cited higher financing costs and rising oil prices as risks to growth.

161. President Ram Nath Kovind left on a three-nation visit to Greece, Suriname and Cuba. The first halt of the nine-day tour will be at Athens, where he will meet Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos. President will leave for Suriname on the 2nd leg where he will hold discussions with President Desire Delano Bouterse. In the last leg of his tour, the President will reach Cuba. He is scheduled to hold discussions with his Cuban counterpart Miguel Diaz – Canel Bermudez.

168. The Reserve Bank of India has eased investment norms for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) in debt. RBI increased the FPIs cap on investment in government security to 30% of the outstanding stock of that security, from 20% earlier.
